Guillermo Del Toro has claimed his third personal Academy Award for the Netflix movie Pinocchio, which picked up the Best Animated Film Oscar. The Mexican director went toe to toe in with Disney in 2022 when he released his version of the classic children’s story at the same time the House of Mouse put out a live-action remake of their animated classic. While the Disney movie was panned by critics and audiences, and also won a Razzie Award, del Toro’s darker take on the tale logged near perfect reviews and has now received its final reward.

Pinocchio was finally released in 2022 after being on del Toro’s project list for over a decade. Retelling the story of the little wooden boy created by Carlo Collodi, and pulling its inspiration from the illustrated version by Gris Grimly, del Toro has been planning his passion project for a long time and his patience and dedication have finally paid off.

In this version of the story, Gregory Mann provides of the voice of Pinocchio, who is guided by one Sebastian J Cricket, voiced by Obi-Wan Kenobi star Ewan McGregor, as he embarks on a series of adventures down some less than friendly paths. The film also boasts performances from David Bradley, Christoph Waltz, Ron Perlman, John Turturro, Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett and Tilda Swinton.
