Former professional baseball player Enrique Garzón Quiñónez, 57—who distinguished himself as a pitcher for the Tomateros de Culiacán in the Mexican Pacific League (LMP)—was executed while working as an Uber driver in the Villa Unión district, located in the municipality of Mazatlán, Sinaloa.
The incident took place on Boulevard Niños Héroes, near a paint store, where the victim was standing next to his vehicle. According to preliminary reports, hitmen in a moving car pulled up alongside him and fired at point-blank range before fleeing the scene.
Following reports of gunfire, personnel from the Mexican Army, the National Guard, and the State Preventive Police arrived at the location to establish a security perimeter. Upon their arrival, emergency responders confirmed the death of the athlete, whose body was found lying beside his vehicle.
Enrique Garzón Quiñónez left an indelible mark on the history of professional baseball in Mexico on November 19, 2000, when he pitched a perfect game while wearing the uniform of the Tomateros de Culiacán. During that memorable performance on the mound, the pitcher retired all 27 opposing batters without allowing a single hit, walk, or run, leading his team to a 1–0 victory.
