Carlos Manzo’s death certificate lists the slain Uruapan mayor as single and leaves the spouse’s name blank, according to a filed documents. The disclosure has renewed public discussion of his relationship with Grecia Quiroz, who succeeded him as mayor, without establishing a new finding about his assassination.
The certificate identifies him as Carlos Alberto Manzo Rodríguez, 40, and records his death in Uruapan at 8:30 p.m. on November 1, 2025. It lists the cause as a gunshot wound penetrating the abdomen and records burial at the San Juan Evangelista cemetery. Manzo was attacked during the city’s Festival de Velas.
Michoacán Gov. Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla addressed the document at an October 28 news conference. He said that, based on the information available to him, Manzo had never married. But he emphasized that the former mayor’s civil status was irrelevant to identifying those responsible for the killing and that securing justice should remain the priority.
His remarks came amid public disagreements between Quiroz and Manzo’s brother, Juan. In her interview with Ciro Gómez Leyva, Quiroz urged him to keep family differences private and focus on solving the homicide. She also rejected allegations that she was shielding municipal officials, saying members of the administration had cooperated with investigators.
The attention to their relationship drew criticism from state legislator Carlos Bautista Tafolla, who described it as political violence based on gender and questioned its relevance to the investigation. His characterization was an allegation, not a determination by a court or electoral authority.
The document supports a narrower conclusion than some headlines suggest: it records Manzo as single and names no spouse. No marriage-registry search, civil-registry clarification or court determination was obtained for this review. The entry should not be presented as disproving their personal relationship or as evidence of wrongdoing by Quiroz.
