A federal judge has admitted the *amparo* petition (a constitutional protection suit) filed by the defense team of Danna Yanina “N”—the 18-year-old facing formal charges for the femicide of Dafne Zapata Quintos at the Marina Doenitz Military Academy in Ciudad Madero, Tamaulipas.
This admission does not mean Danna Yanina is being released, nor does it imply a judge has determined her innocence. Rather, a federal judge will review whether her rights were violated during the criminal proceedings in Tamaulipas. The young woman remains in pretrial detention at the Altamira Penal Execution Center.
Attorney Carlos David Robles Figueroa, a member of Danna Yanina’s legal team, announced the admission via social media. He explained that the defense had previously filed an appeal against the formal indictment issued by the presiding judge on July 28, but the lower-court judge had not yet forwarded the case to the appellate court. That delay prompted the federal filing.
“Locally, the matter is a quagmire and a complete mess,” Robles Figueroa wrote. He added: “As a legal team, we have faith in the federal justice system; we promise not to stop working until she is free. We are going all out to prove her innocence.”
