A new development has emerged in the investigation into the murder of Hipólito Mora Chávez—a former leader of Michoacán self-defense groups and a lime grower—following the confirmed arrest in the United States of Rogelio “N.” Known by the aliases “El Conejo” or “El Conejillo,” he was wanted by Mexican authorities for his alleged role in the armed attack that claimed the activist’s life.
The capture was confirmed to Infobae México by the victim’s brother, Guadalupe Mora Chávez. In an interview, he explained that the suspect was detained approximately 15 days ago in California and is currently in the custody of immigration authorities.
According to the account provided to this outlet, the arrest did not stem directly from the investigation into Hipólito Mora’s murder. Guadalupe Mora explained that “El Conejillo” was located in the United States and, unable to prove his legal immigration status, was turned over to the appropriate authorities.
“He was arrested 15 days ago in California. It wasn’t ICE that arrested him; they didn’t pin anything specific on him, so they handed him over to immigration, and he was told he is going to be deported,” Guadalupe Mora told Infobae México.
