An attack with explosives killed Christian Tello, a captain in the Mexican Navy (Semar), and wounded two marines who were protecting a group of mothers searching for their missing loved ones in the rural area of Mazatlán. This incident also confirmed the recurrence of attacks with mines or similar devices in southern Sinaloa.
Hours after the attack, security forces reinforcing the El Vainillo-El Recodo route located the bodies of three suspected civilian attackers in a wooded area near the town of Veranos. Forensic experts arrived at the scene to recover the bodies and conduct the corresponding investigations.
The attack occurred on the highway between the town of El Recodo and the police station of El Tecomate de Siqueros, where armed forces were conducting security patrols and preventive surveillance. The operation was part of a security detail protecting a group of mothers searching for their missing children who were excavating on a property.
According to available information, armed civilians stormed the area while military personnel were securing the perimeter. The commander in charge of the operation was Marine Corps Captain Christian Tello, who suffered serious injuries during the explosion.
According to those who knew him, he was remembered as a cheerful man, a good husband, son, and father of three children, and his death has caused great distress among family, friends, and fellow marines.
In the same incident, two other marines, identified as Jesús Alberto and Jesús Adrián, remain hospitalized receiving medical treatment. Authorities have not yet issued an official report on their condition.
