Former Mayor of Miahuatlán, Oaxaca, Shot; Prosecutor’s Office Confirms Security Detail Member Killed

On June 22, José Alberto Martínez Luna—who previously served as the mayor of Miahuatlán, Oaxaca—was shot. A member of his security detail died during the attack.

The incident was confirmed by the Oaxaca State Attorney General’s Office (FGEO), which noted that two people were injured—including the former official—and are reported to be in stable condition.

“A member of the security detail, identified by the initials J. C. P., lost his life inside the vehicle after being shot. Subsequently, two individuals were admitted to a hospital for medical treatment: the municipality’s former mayor, identified by the initials J. A. M. L., and a second security detail member,” stated the Oaxaca Prosecutor’s Office on social media.

The incident took place on Federal Highway 175, near the San Juan Bosco intersection. Following the violent attack, authorities launched a joint operation to locate those responsible.

This security operation was deployed in Miahuatlán de Porfirio Díaz and the surrounding area. Additionally, the Oaxaca Prosecutor’s Office noted that investigative protocols had been activated, with forensic experts and investigative personnel deployed to gather evidence that would allow for the identification of the attackers.
