During the “Yo Con Maru” (I Stand with Maru) event, organized by the PAN in Chihuahua on May 30, Governor Maru Campos delivered a speech heavily laden with accusations against Morena and the Federal Government. However, a specific excerpt from her remarks began circulating on social media, triggering a wave of reactions.
“In the past, there were rulers who colluded with drug cartels—and that, in itself, was a very grave matter—but the Government was still the entity that maintained control,” Campos reportedly stated, according to information disseminated on digital platforms.
In its original context, the phrase sought to draw a distinction between past administrations—during which, according to the governor, the State maintained command despite its ties to organized crime—and what she described as Morena’s current model. She characterized the latter as a “narco-government” in which, in her view, the authorities serve the drug cartels rather than the other way around.
What began as a political attack against the federal administration ultimately evolved—judging by the conversation unfolding on social media—into a point of criticism directed back at the speaker herself.
Users on digital platforms pointed out that acknowledging that previous governments—including those led by the PAN, the party to which Campos belongs—had “colluded with drug cartels” amounts to admitting that agreements existed between authorities and criminal organizations during those administrations. The very opposition that accuses Morena of being a “narco-party” has, through the voice of one of its most prominent figures, seemingly acknowledged that such practices are neither new nor exclusive to their political rivals.
