Noelia Castillo Ramos—the young Spanish woman with paraplegia who spent the final months of her life waging a legal battle against her father, who sought to keep her alive against her will—received euthanasia this Thursday. Her death occurred amidst intense media scrutiny that has ignited controversy and sparked the spread of false rumors on social media.

Noelia died at the age of 25 at the Sant Camil Hospital-Residence in Sant Pere de Ribes, Barcelona, where she had been admitted. This was reported by the organization *Abogados Cristianos* (Christian Lawyers), which represented the young woman’s father in his legal appeals.

Noelia Castillo’s case first came to the attention of the Spanish public on August 2, 2024—the day her euthanasia had originally been scheduled—after she had received approval from the public body responsible for ensuring the proper application of the right to a dignified death, as enshrined in Spanish law.

At the very last moment, a judge halted the assisted death in response to a lawsuit filed by the young woman’s father, who was advised by the ultra-Catholic group *Abogados Cristianos*.

The case proceeded through the local courts, the High Court of Justice of Catalonia, the Supreme Court, and finally the Constitutional Court, which dismissed the father’s final appeal—an urgent motion once again requesting the provisional suspension of the euthanasia.
Ultimately, nearly two years later, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) refused to halt the euthanasia—as her father had requested—after he had exhausted all legal avenues within Spain.
