US President Donald Trump announced Monday that he has ordered the Department of Defense to postpone all military strikes against Iranian power plants and infrastructure for five days, following what he described as “very good and productive” talks with Iran over the past two days.
The president made the announcement via his social media account, Truth Social, in a message written entirely in capital letters, his usual style for announcements of utmost importance. Trump stated that the negotiations aim for a “complete and total resolution” of hostilities in the Middle East and will continue throughout the week.
The pause is contingent upon the success of the ongoing talks and comes at a time of extreme tension: two days ago, Trump had given Iran a 48-hour ultimatum to reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz or face the destruction of its energy infrastructure.
