After it was revealed that a 10-year-old girl had been poisoned after allegedly consuming fentanyl in tamales she ate in the state of Puebla, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo said that an investigation was underway.

This Thursday, at her morning press conference, Sheinbaum Pardo stated that she had asked the Security Cabinet, in their meeting prior to the press conference, as well as the Ministry of Health, to thoroughly investigate whether it was indeed fentanyl and, if so, how the substance got into the tamales.

“Fentanyl is very toxic, very poisonous, very harmful, so with very little it can even cause death. So first we have to find out if it really was fentanyl, second, how it got into this food, and third, the investigations that have to proceed on the matter, until we have more information. This information comes from Puebla, they issued it. Before we confirm, there has to be an investigation by the Prosecutor’s Office accompanied by its experts, along with the Security Cabinet, and if necessary, the Ministry of Health,” the national leader stated.
