In the early morning hours of February 5, state security forces implemented Operation Swarm in Jalisco, which resulted in the arrest of the mayor of Tequila, Diego “N,” and three municipal officials. Reports indicate that those arrested are linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

Diego “N” and his administration had already been accused of alleged irregularities against companies involved in tequila production.

Last December, a tequila company accused the Tequila City Council of what they considered an irregular property tax, claiming it exceeded what they had paid in previous years.

For their part, municipal authorities stated that the company’s debt was around 60 million pesos.

The case led municipal agents to place seals on the company, halting operations. These seals were later removed.

“The municipality understood that what they were requesting was neither legally nor financially viable, and therefore all the closure seals on the Cuervo plant were lifted,” Governor Pablo Lemus commented at the time.

Similarly, the Jalisco Attorney General confirmed the complaint filed by the company.

“We just received a complaint against the City Council, the mayor, and some municipal officials regarding the Cuervo tequila company. I don’t know if there are any other complaints that may have been filed with the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office,” the Jalisco Attorney General shared at a press conference last December.
