Menchofest Cancelled in Tinaja de Vargas: CJNG Was Going to Celebrate El Mencho and Tío Lako, Their Plaza Boss

In a decisive action to prevent the glorification of criminal activities, security forces from all three levels of government intervened in the town of Tinaja de Vargas. During the operation, a fireworks display was dismantled, and advertising material glorifying leaders of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), such as El Mencho (deceased) and Heraclio Guerrero Martínez, alias Tío Lako, plaza boss of Tanhuato, was removed.

The joint operation involved the State Police (SSP), the National Defense Secretariat (Defensa), the National Guard (GN), and the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), who deployed a security detail during the community’s patron saint festivities.

Upon arriving at the site, agents discovered a complex pyrotechnic display that, far from having religious or traditional motifs, featured figures of roosters and rifles (known as “goat horns”), distinctive symbols of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

In addition to the fireworks, the following were located and seized:

Printed banners: Photographs and messages alluding to high-priority criminal targets.

Celebration logistics: According to intelligence reports and information shared on social media the previous year, the event was intended to celebrate Nemesio Oseguera, alias “El Mencho,” and local leaders of the organization.

During the operation to remove the materials, a group of residents attempted to prevent authorities from confiscating the fireworks and banners. Despite the tension generated by civilians attempting to protect the elements associated with the criminal group, law enforcement maintained control and proceeded to completely dismantle the structure.

All the seized material was turned over to the appropriate authorities to be included in the corresponding investigation file for the crime of inciting crime and any other related offenses.
