The mayor of Celaya, Guanajuato, Juan Miguel Ramírez Sánchez, acknowledged that, before taking office, he met with members of a criminal group who demanded money and government positions.

Ramírez Sánchez, who replaced Gisela Gaytán, the Morena party candidate assassinated on her first day of campaigning, stated that organized crime has approached him on more than one occasion; however, he asserted that he has never given in to any agreement.

“I’ve never made deals, I won’t, and I prefer, if the situation becomes too difficult, to move my family out of here and continue working,” he said when approached by the media.

The mayor revealed that he recently had telephone contact with another member of the organization, who offered him assistance.

The security situation has led Ramírez Sánchez to consider moving his family out of the city. His daughter resigned from a position in the municipality of Tarimoro after several incidents related to insecurity.
