All it took for Carlos Manzo’s killers to carry out the murder, which sparked national outrage, was a messaging app, surveillance, and a 9mm handgun. Twenty days later, investigations by state and federal authorities can confirm that the murder of the mayor of Uruapan bore the signature of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
At a press conference, the head of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), Omar García Harfuch, announced the arrest of the coordinator of Carlos Manzo’s murder, identified as Jorge Armando ‘N’, alias “El Licenciado” (The Lawyer).
According to the investigation, the detainee was in charge of ordering a cell of young men to surveil, follow, and attack the mayor of Uruapan. While El Licenciado was presented as the mastermind behind the murder, his affiliation with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) raises the responsibility for the crime to higher-ranking members of the criminal organization operating in Michoacán.
