The march of the self-proclaimed “Generation Z” movement took place this Saturday in Mexico City (CDMX), following days of intense mobilization driven by right-wing sectors seeking to demonstrate discontent with the security strategy of the federal government headed by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. According to the group’s list of demands, they will demand a mechanism to remove the president from office.
The group departed from the Angel of Independence at 11:00 a.m. and arrived at the Zócalo in Mexico City shortly before 1:00 p.m. Once at the Zócalo, a group of masked individuals threw firecrackers and managed to remove the barriers protecting the National Palace, sparking clashes with the Mexico City police, who dispersed the group. So far, one police officer has been reported injured.
Among the demands of the movement, whose leaders are still unclear, are the recall of the President and the election of her replacement by the citizens, the demilitarization of public security and the strengthening of local security, as well as a renewal of Congress, where the Fourth Transformation (4T) holds a supermajority, for “better representation.” President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo spoke this afternoon following the events that occurred during the so-called Generation Z March in the Zócalo of Mexico City.
The federal leader condemned the acts of violence that took place during the demonstration, where clashes between protesters and police were reported.
“No to violence,” she said from Tabasco, calling for citizen expressions to be carried out respectfully and without aggression.
