At the end of a press conference, Tania Valdez Cuellar, the mayor of Tepeji del Río, Hidalgo, announced to various media outlets the opening of an investigation into threats she received following accusations of alleged ties to a criminal group in the region.

The mayor stated that after being mentioned in banners attributed to drug cartels, she began receiving calls threatening her. She also acknowledged that although she has protection from the National Guard and the Hidalgo State Attorney General’s Office (PGJEH), she fears for her safety.

In response to these events, the mayor opened an investigation, and the case was referred to the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), headed by Omar García Harfuch, which is currently investigating both the appearance of the banners and the activity of criminal groups in the region.

Valdez Cuellar emphasized that the issue of security in the Tula-Tepeji area is being addressed: “I have said it publicly, I have no connection to it. Perhaps it is because what was previously permitted is no longer allowed, which is why we are at risk. The Tula-Tepeji issue is being addressed properly, combating these actions, and I believe the threat is a result,” she stated in an interview during her visit to Pachuca for the third annual report of the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Corruption Offenses.
