US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced a military operation called Southern Spear, related to Washington’s fight against drug trafficking originating in Latin America.
This new initiative comes at a time marked by increasing pressure from the Donald Trump administration on Venezuela.
In a message on the social media platform X, Hegseth did not provide concrete details about the operation beyond explaining that it will be led by a specific joint task force and the Southern Command, which oversees US military operations in South America, Central America, and the Caribbean.
Although not explicitly stated, it is understood that the name Southern Spear could encompass the substantial military deployment that the United States has maintained in the Caribbean, off the Venezuelan coast, since this summer.
