This Saturday, November 8, the arrest of Jorge Antonio Sánchez Ortega, the second gunman involved in the assassination of Luis Donaldo Colosio, was announced. For more than a decade, he has been accused of the PRI candidate’s murder and the so-called “conspiracy theory.”
Sánchez Ortega was arrested 15 meters from where the politician from Sonora fell wounded on March 23, 1994, in Lomas Taurinas, Tijuana. He had been working for the Cisen (National Security and Investigation Center) for about seven months, which assigned him to monitor Colosio’s rally in the Baja California city.
After the attack, blood was found on his jacket and lead residue was found on his hands. Physically resembling Mario Aburto, convicted as the gunman of the presidential candidate, Sánchez Ortega posed as a reporter while working for the Cisen.
It has come to light that Jorge Antonio Sánchez, the alleged second shooter, has been arrested on a federal warrant. The first time he was apprehended, he was released due to lack of evidence, though other accounts claim it was due to a cover-up by Genaro García Luna, who, as head of the National Security and Intelligence Center (CISEN), allegedly protected him.
The evidence presented by the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) against Jorge Antonio demonstrates his presence at the scene of the murder, at the exact moment of the crime, with only seconds separating the two shots. It has also been alleged that he fled the scene immediately after the shooting and did not assist in transporting the victim to the hospital.
