Earlier this month, the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned eight individuals and 12 Mexican companies allegedly linked to the Los Chapitos faction, including members of the Favela López family.
It is known that members of this family operated a company that allegedly supplied and shipped chemical precursors to members and associates of one of the Sinaloa Cartel factions.
Among the 12 sanctioned companies, one stands out, named Sumilab, SA de CV, based in Culiacán, Sinaloa, and run by members of the Favela López family.
“Sumilab was designated for its alleged involvement in the supply and shipment of chemical precursors to members and associates of the Sinaloa Cartel,” stated a bulletin from the US authorities. This company had already been sanctioned by US authorities in May 2023, which allegedly caused the Favela López family to change its modus operandi, but it remained involved in supplying chemical precursors for the Sinaloa Cartel’s fentanyl production.
Apparently, Sumilab sells chemical products to companies in the United States, where the drug is synthesized and marketed in the land of the stars and stripes.
In an internet search, MILENIO found information about Sumilab, SA de CV, on the website Online Cosmos.
Upon visiting its website, you can see the logo of the same company sanctioned by the United States government: it is a laboratory matrix with the name of the group allegedly led by the Favela López family.
Sumilab describes itself as a supplier dedicated to the distribution of materials and equipment for all laboratories, from clinical to schools, industrial to research centers. However, when they tried to access their website, the domain no longer existed.
At least one contract was also found with the Universidad Autónoma del Occidente and Sumilab, SA de CV for the purchase of computer equipment, for a sum of more than 3 million pesos. It is noteworthy that this document includes the name of the legal representative of the company linked to Los Chapitos.
