El Chicles, the dog who became famous for running marathons in Tijuana, Baja California, died Tuesday from poisoning, reported his caretaker, Héctor ‘Flecha’ Hernández.
Through a Facebook post, Hernández, severely affected by the situation, broke the news, emphasizing that despite medical efforts to save him, the canine did not survive.
“I’m just letting you know that someone very bad, someone with a very bad heart, poisoned Chicles. Chicles has passed away. Today, September 30, 2025, Chicles left us,” he said through tears from a veterinary clinic.
The dog gained prominence by participating in marathons and athletic races in the border city of Tijuana, where he not only competed but also took first place.
Some of his accolades include first place in the Perruning category and third place in the General Conalep 5K category in the 5-kilometer marathon organized by Conalep Campus 2.
His popularity was so great that even experienced runners invited him to their training sessions, and he was in demand at educational institutions during sporting events.
