“Chicago is a great American city. Perhaps the last great American city,” wrote the legendary Norman Mailer in the 1960s. Now, an incident that occurred on its streets, captured on video and going viral on social media, has become a banner of civil resistance against the abuses of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), better known by its acronym in English: “la migra,” empowered like never before by President Donald Trump in his radical anti-immigrant campaign.
The video was posted last Sunday by a local citizen. “Earlier today, ICE agents pursued a man in downtown Chicago after he made verbal comments, but there was no physical or threatening contact. The man managed to escape.” The video speaks volumes.
A delivery man on a bicycle fled from ICE agents patrolling the streets of downtown. The man approached and shouted, “Fuck Trump!”
The officers—with their faces covered, wearing dark glasses and military uniforms—laughed at first, but then took the bait: they charged at the man, who still had time to pick up his cell phone, which he had dropped near an officer while sending his message. He sped off on his bike and dodged a dozen officers.
It took less than 30 seconds and quickly went viral on the internet. The original message, posted on X (formerly Twitter), had 13.3 million views as of Tuesday, but has been replicated ad nauseam on the same site, on other social networks, and on news sites. The replies include versions featuring music from the classic English comedian Benny Hill, music from the superhero film Avengers, and even music from the classic Indiana Jones saga.
But beyond being celebrated and used to ridicule ICE agents stationed on Chicago’s most central streets, usually filled with tourists and workers of all kinds, some pointed to the real threat: that a group of officers who, according to law, can only detain undocumented migrants, would roam the country’s main communities and try to detain—and actually do so—people who say things they disagree with or that bother them.
