‘El Menchito’ Transferred to Supermax in Colorado, US; Lawyer Seeks Appeal

Rubén Oseguera González is being held in the supermax facility at the Florence Penitentiary in Colorado, one of the most secure and restrictive prisons in the United States, where El Chapo Guzmán is held, for example.

Under the alias El Menchito, he led the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) alongside his father, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, aka El Mencho. This led to his arrest, extradition, and prosecution in the United States. He is currently serving a life sentence.

Oseguera is also under Special Administrative Measures (SAMs), a series of prison conditions that have been confirmed to keep him isolated from the general population of the penitentiary, limiting his contact with the outside world, and limiting his time outside his cell.

The prison is known for its harsh isolation measures, and in the case of El Chapo and El Menchito, they are in addition to the conditions of confinement under the SAMs, which, according to the drug trafficker’s lawyer, are torture.

“It’s truly an atrocity that just because someone receives a significant sentence, that person must be tortured constantly. And putting them in the ADX is hell itself. It’s not supported by their record or their behavior, and I believe it was done solely to impose an additional punishment not contemplated by the court at the time of their sentencing.”

The Mexican was tried in September 2024, and after nearly a month of testimony and evidence, a jury in Washington, D.C., found him guilty of one count each of cocaine and methamphetamine trafficking and one count of possession of firearms and destructive instruments.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office indicated that, during his criminal career, El Menchito became the Narco Prince of the CJNG (CJNG), under the protection of his father, who founded the criminal group from what remained after the disappearance of the Milenio Cartel, an organization under which El Mencho operated as a plaza boss in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, today one of the strongholds of his criminal network.
