Fear, media manipulation, censorship on social media, absolute government control, and widespread fear of speaking out or criticizing — with censorship and punishment included. This is Donald Trump’s style of governance.
There have been few figures in history with such a capacity to lie. One could imagine a press conference where someone says: “Mr. President, it’s raining.” And we could see the rain on the side windows, hear the thunder and the water hitting the glass. Even so, Trump would be capable of saying: “Fake news! Who do you work for… CNN? The biggest liars, nobody watches them.” And then continue as if nothing happened.
Or hearing his plans to invade Gaza, take over the territory, and even build a Trump Tower on “those wonderful beaches” (I would say: those beaches that hide thousands of corpses left behind by the Israeli slaughter with American weapons), and relocate its people to other parts of the world. Palestinians don’t deserve their land… just for being Palestinian. A reporter asked him: “Under what authority would you do that?” And Trump, with a slight sarcastic smile, replied: “Under the power of the United States military.”
Everyone is afraid of him; very few are indifferent. With tariffs, he has brought Europe, Asia, and some Latin American countries to their knees. From his medieval mindset, he receives shiny gold gifts from his colleagues and dares to ridicule them either in person or through the media — which he so despises.
Privacy no longer exists in the United States, even for tourists who dare to travel there. They must give consent for their devices to be inspected: cell phones, computers, tablets, or any other means. If there is even a slight mention of the presidential figure, even as a joke, they will be penalized.
In a new, potentially devastating move, he wants to deploy the military in the streets of the country. Any sign of opposition will be silenced. And court rulings will simply be ignored.
Years ago, during the exoduses of people fleeing dictators and authoritarian regimes, you’d hear: “We want freedom,” “We want to live in the U.S.” Well, now, Trump 2.0 is closer to resembling North Korea, Nicaragua, or those military regimes that control African countries.
When you ask any U.S. resident their opinion about Trump, many respond in silence, in whispers. If the wrong person finds out, they could be punished. The tariffs aim to punish other countries, but the invasion of privacy is designed for the country’s own residents. For Trump, everything must be an open book.
We are living in a dark era. As a famous Latin American intellectual once said: “We are at the mercy of whims, not ideas, of a person unfit to govern.”
