Brothers detained at Alligator Alcatraz are now in Mexico without charges

Mexicans Carlos Martín González, 26, and his brother Alejandro, who were being held at Alligator Alcatraz prison in Florida, United States, are now in the country without any charges following assistance from the Consulate and the Mexican government, according to Roberto Velasco, head of the North American Unit.

In a message posted on his X account, Velasco detailed the progress in the Mexicans’ case after their arrest was reported and their father requested consular protection:

“Chained to the ground hand and foot,” was how Martín González described his sons’ situation when he requested government assistance to free them from Alligator Alcatraz, the new detention center for migrants in the United States. According to his testimony, they were held there for several days starting on July 7.

Although one of them had legal residency and the other had a tourist visa, they were victims of the latest raids aimed at the mass deportation of foreigners seeking housing in the northern country. Carlos was detained while driving, and his brother was captured as he tried to help him.

Upon learning of this, the father traveled from Mexico City to Orlando to meet with Juan Sabines, the Mexican consul, who warned him of the human rights risks faced by people in his sons’ situation due to the lack of regulation, as it is not affiliated with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

After the brothers’ arrival this Sunday, the head of the Northern Unit stated that both he and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are closely monitoring the Mexicans who remain in this prison, prompting Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to order constant monitoring.

“(…) we monitor that their immigration processes are carried out in accordance with due process and respect human dignity,” Roberto Velasco concluded.
