Five years after the attack on Omar García Harfuch, María Sorté, his mother, recalls how she experienced the news when her other son asked her not to turn on the television because the car her youngest son was traveling in had been hit by 400 bullets.

In an interview with Yordi Rosado, the leading actress spoke about her career and various personal tragedies that led her to become a woman prepared for any adversity, or so she believed before the violent episode her son Omar experienced in June 2020.

Omar, Mexico City’s Secretary of Security, had just experienced an attack near Paseo de la Reforma in the Lomas de Chapultepec neighborhood.
While he was traveling in an armored vehicle, a group of men with long guns fired at the car. While the secretary was not in any danger, three other people lost their lives.

The actress recalls that when the news aired on television, she was still asleep, and when her only son, Adrián, found out what had happened, he went to find her and asked her not to turn on the news, a warning that immediately alarmed her.

“He opened my bedroom door with a jerk and said, ‘Don’t be scared, Omar’s fine.’ I stood up and went to get the TV remote, and he said, ‘Don’t watch it.’ So I said, ‘What’s wrong?’ He turned on the phone, the police were there, it was horrible, I wanted to die,” she said.

“I don’t know how many minutes passed, but it seemed like an eternity to me. It was very painful because, even though he told me he was fine, I had my doubts. I thought he might be hurt,” she emphasized.

That same day, the actress had the opportunity to visit Omar in the hospital: she recalls that, in addition to giving him a hug, the first thing he told her was that he should be grateful to God because, in her opinion, a miracle is the only explanation why nothing had happened to him.
