President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that 222 Mexicans have been detained in immigration raids carried out by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement since June 6.

At her morning press conference at the National Palace, the president explained that support for Mexicans residing in the United States through consulates has been strengthened.

“In total, there are 222 Mexicans since the beginning… The support system for Mexicans at the consulates has been strengthened, including information, what to do, and all the mechanisms that help us assist all Mexicans who are not only in California, but also in other parts of the United States.”

“So we are strengthening the consulates and consular support for all those detained, as well as the Mexico Te Abraza program, which is also in operation for all those arriving in Mexico who can find employment, providing support through the migrant card, the Paisano support, and all the social programs available to them, including IMSS affiliation.”

From the Treasury Department, the head of the federal executive branch emphasized that the list of 10 proposals for consular appointments she sent to the Congress of the Union was compiled through a call for applications, to which nearly 200 people applied.

“From a list we asked for people who were socially sensitive and willing to provide this new attention to our fellow citizens in the United States.

“And from there, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs formed a selection committee that looked at a series of points, for example, whether they spoke English or not, and also their work experience and whether they knew what consulates did,” she explained.

Sheinbaum Pardo emphasized that the list is diverse and not from a single political party. “They’re not just from Morena, so to speak, but from different places who were interested in being consuls.” So, from there, this list was drawn up, and I met with them. I told them what we want from the consuls, which was, above all, closeness and attention to our fellow countrymen and women in the United States. Everyone agreed.”

Among the candidates are Luis Rodríguez Bucio, former commander of the National Guard, proposed for the Mexican consulate in Dallas, Texas, as well as Marco Antonio Mena, former governor of Tlaxcala and former PRI member, proposed for the consulate in San Francisco, California.
