Violence has once again struck working families in the municipality of Uruapan, Michoacán, following an armed attack that claimed the life of 28-year-old Tania R. and left her mother-in-law, 52-year-old Guadalupe E., seriously wounded. Both women were working at a taco stand in the Valle de San Pedro neighborhood when the incident occurred.
The tragic events took place last Saturday night on Venustiano Carranza Street, where Tania and Guadalupe were working at their taco stand. Suddenly, two hitmen on a motorcycle arrived at the scene and, without a word, opened fire repeatedly on the two women before fleeing in an unknown direction.
Panic gripped the establishment as the gunfire caught customers and passersby off guard. Amidst the chaos and desperate attempts to reach safety, two young girls who were present sustained minor injuries and abrasions while trying to take cover from the bullets; fortunately, they were assessed on-site by emergency responders and did not require hospitalization.
Local paramedics arrived promptly at the scene to provide first aid to both women and rushed them to a private hospital.
However, hours later, it was confirmed that Tania R. had passed away; she could not survive the severity of the gunshot wounds she sustained to her head. Her mother-in-law, Guadalupe, remains under close medical observation due to the injuries she suffered. The crime scene was cordoned off by personnel from the Municipal Police, the National Guard, and the Secretariat of National Defense, who launched a search operation in the surrounding neighborhoods; however, they were unable to apprehend the assailants.
Specialists from the Forensic Services and Crime Scene Unit (USPEC)—part of the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE)—collected evidence at the site, recovering at least eight spent shell casings from a handgun. The young woman’s body was transported to the Forensic Medical Service (SEMEFO) for mandatory post-mortem examinations, while judicial authorities are compiling an investigation file to track down those responsible for this tragedy—a tragedy that has left a family in Uruapan in mourning.
