A judge has initiated criminal proceedings against Alan Yair “N”—known by the aliases “El Caimán” or “El Árabe”—whom the State of Mexico Attorney General’s Office (FGJEM) identifies as the likely perpetrator of an extortion offense committed against a merchant in the municipality of Chimalhuacán. The judicial authority has ordered his pretrial detention.

The individual is considered a high-priority target by the State of Mexico Prosecutor’s Office due to his role in fueling violence in the eastern part of the state. Following an analysis of the evidence presented by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the judge granted a two-month period for further investigation.

How the extortion in Chimalhuacán took place

According to initial investigations by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the incident occurred on February 6 of this year. The victim, a merchant, was working on the streets of Chimalhuacán when he was approached by four armed individuals, including the man now facing charges.

The perpetrators allegedly claimed to be members of the criminal group La Familia Michoacana. Under this guise, they demanded a payment of 2,000 pesos from the merchant as a condition for allowing him to continue operating his business in the area.

In addition to this initial payment, the individuals informed the victim that, from that point forward, he would be required to pay 4,000 pesos every week to continue his commercial activities at that location. The demand was accompanied by a direct threat: if he refused, they would harm either him or his family.
