A man wanted in connection with a dentist’s killing in Nogales died in a shootout with police in Agua Prieta, Sonora, leaving two officers wounded.
An attempted arrest in Agua Prieta, Sonora, ended in a deadly confrontation on October 17, leaving a man wanted in a homicide investigation dead and two police officers injured.
The operation was carried out at a residence between Avenues 18 and 19. Investigators were seeking a man with an outstanding arrest warrant for aggravated homicide. According to witnesses, the suspect barricaded himself inside the property and opened fire when officers attempted to execute the warrant.
Police returned fire, killing the suspect. An officer from the Sonora Criminal Investigation Agency (AMIC) and a municipal police officer were wounded.
State and municipal security personnel secured the area, restricted traffic and began collecting evidence. Forensic investigators were called to process the scene and recover the body.
The deceased suspect was identified as as Ernest “N,” also referred to as Ernesto “N,” a 30-year-old originally from Prescott, Arizona.
Carlos Alberto Flores, head of AMIC, said investigators were seeking the man in connection with the October 15 killing of Amed de Jesús “N,” a 42-year-old dentist in Nogales, Sonora.
The suspect had a criminal history in the United States. The precise nature and legal disposition of those records were not established in the material reviewed, so they should not be described as convictions without documentation.
The two wounded officers reportedly suffered injuries that were not life-threatening. By October 19, both had been discharged from medical care.
The police operation therefore involved two distinct incidents: the earlier killing of the dentist in Nogales and the subsequent armed confrontation in Agua Prieta. Investigators linked the suspect to the homicide, but the attempted arrest ended before he could face trial.
