Professional boxer Emiliano Caballero, 23, was killed in the early hours of Friday, September 25, 2026, inside his home in the Héroes del 5 de Mayo neighborhood of San Buenaventura, in the municipality of Toluca, State of Mexico.
According to preliminary investigations, a group of armed individuals forcibly entered the property while the athlete was with his family.
The assailants explicitly asked for an individual known as “El Mesitas” and shot Caballero directly before fleeing the scene. Emergency services arrived and confirmed the young man’s death. A leading theory in the investigation is that the attackers may have mistaken him for someone else.
Caballero, who had won the State of Mexico Cup as an amateur two years prior, held an undefeated professional record of four wins—two of which were first-round knockouts.
The athlete was a member of “Team Canon” and balanced his athletic training with his law studies; he was in the final semesters of his degree program and was currently completing his professional internship.
He was planning his next bout for November and intended to compete in Spain in 2027 as part of his international career development.
Police officers cordoned off the scene, while forensic experts from the Institute of Forensic Services and agents from the State of Mexico Attorney General’s Office (FGJEM) collected evidence and opened an investigation file to determine the circumstances of the incident and locate those responsible.
